Di questi tempi è la parola “clown” usata più spesso di pagliaccio. Perhaps pagliaccio is used more operatically these days? :notes:

I would say pagliaccio is now used more often to indicate a behavior than a job.

So “fare il pagliaccio” is more likely to refer to acting as a fool, joking around, than to a career in a circus.
