Mi ci volettero diverse ore per decifrarla

Ciao a tutti. Per favore, can anyone shed any luce on “volettero”? I would have put “Mi ci sono volute…”. Mille grazie.

I am not certain but volettero seems to be an archaic form of the passato remoto.

I see it used in the Bible:

Ma quando alcuni greci volettero vederLo, disse: L’ora è venuta, in cui il Figlio dell’uomo deve essere glorificato. Giovanni 12:23

Vollero is the modern form.

“Ci vollero anni per completare il progetto.” (“It took years to complete the project.”)

Yes, vollero was the only one I could find. When in doubt I usually go Remoto;-)
