Invece di o Invece che?

Today I came across this phrase “Per sbaglio ha voltato a sinistra invece che a destra”?

I thought that “di” always followed “invece” so was surprised to see “che” here.

Cosa ne pensi? Grazie in anticipo.

I had no idea but looked up Treccani:

Most helpful, MRgK. The word “arcaic” caught my eye so l’ll probably stay with “di”. Ciao ciao e grazie mille!

You can’t use DI before another proposition (in this case A), so it has to be “invece CHE a”, just as it would be “invece CHE nel/tra/del” etc. You get the same with comparatives: meglio DI me, but meglio CHE a casa.

Grazie mille @Crick_G. Most useful to read your explanation as I’ve never come across this before. Cordiali saluti!
