They’re both valid, but ‘recuperara’ makes the ‘esperaba’ sound more like ‘hoped’ and ‘recuperaría’ makes it sound more like ‘expected’, if that makes sense.
That makes a lot of sense. In this case, given that the English translation uses hoped, I think recuperara would have been better.
