Why does it translate to “You have to return” if it uses “Tienen”? I thought that meant it was referring to “they” and it meant “They have to return”.
The chat gpt blurb seems to confirm this, but I wanted to make sure this wasn’t because of some grammatical factor I was not aware of as I am a beginner.
This is directed to ustedes, which is the polite plural address, and it is technically a plural noun (thus tienen). In many parts of Latin America, ustedes has taken over vosotros, even between friends and family.
Gotcha. So just because it can translate to “they” directly doesn’t mean it can’t also apply to a plural “you” which is still referring to a group of people.
In other words, both translations are correct. It seems that I just have to work on thinking about conjugations in a more flexible manner, which I am certain will come with time. My grammar is unfortunately very weak, but between this platform and feedback from users like you I’m already feeling more confident.
