I agree that ‘sobrevolar’ doesn’t fit. The difficullty with ‘cernerse’ is that it sounds peculiar without ‘sobre’ or some other kind of where-phrase, it’s not all that common of a word. ‘Pararse en el aire’? GT proposes ‘el vuelo estacionario’ which sounds good to me if technical.
