“Lo” is the complement, it indicates what you are sorry about. In this case, since you are already stating the reason you are apologising for (ie, being late) adding “lo” would be redundant.
It’s the same as, “sorry about that” vs “sorry about being late”. You wouldn’t say “sorry about that being late”
