Siempre puedo dormir donde sea que esté.

Can anyone explain why this sentence is subjunctive? Confused!!!

Spanish uses the subjunctive in phrases like that, donde sea que esté to express: whenever, wherever, whatever, etc. In this case, the speaker isn’t talking about a specific location, but absolutely anywhere which falls into the realm of the hypothetical.

wherever he is, he’s always complaining - esté donde esté, siempre se está quejando
whatever you do, don’t laugh! - hagas lo que hagas ¡no te vayas a reír!
there are several options, but whichever you choose … - hay varias opciones, pero elijas la que elijas

thank you! So helpful. The subjunctive–wow.
