It’s a very natural way (and, I think, at least in spain, the main way to phrase it) to say that someone is good at something.
Dar (and it’s reflexive form “darse”) has 1 or 2 (or 50, and some set expressions) different meanings, so there’s always a new way to spin it : D; in this case, see the rae under “dársele a alguien bien, mal, mejor, etc., algo” or, in english, the wiktionary on the 18th entry
