I was just reminded by a comment from @alanf_us that I now see that I am studying Brazilian Portuguese (“Português brasileiro”) and not simply Portuguese.
I also see that in the list of languages there is now a European Portuguese (currently at the very end of the list of languages from English - “Português europeu”).
I know that there didn’t used to be a split between these two, as I have previously commented on the fact in discussions on these forums (e.g. on discussion about split Spanish).
Is this a very recent change to split Portuguese in this way?
What is the difference between the two versions?
Has the Brazilian Portuguese version been filtered to remove sentences/collections that have specific European Portuguese vocabulary or grammar constructs, and vice-versa for European Portuguese filtered to remove elements that are specific to Brazilian Portuguese?
Is a similar split being considered for other languages such as Spanish (e.g. Spain vs Hispanic America)?
