You could use either one, but the difference isn’t subtle at all. “Preguntárselo” means “to ask someone about it” and “preguntarlo” means “to ask about it.” That “someone” could mean “you (singular formal/ plural),” “him,” “her,” “them”… Spanish doesn’t allow the pronouns “le” and “les” in front of “lo” or “la,” so those former two become “se.”
