Nosotros también fuimos jóvenes.

English Translation

We were young too.

Reverso.net seems to think this should be imperfect. Also, imperfect is used for age and unspecified amounts of time. The possible breakdown is repetition, “being young” doesn’t fluctuate quickly in the past.

Lacking context, I would have chosen éramos, too.

The distinction between the two tenses is similar to that in French:

  • Imperfect emphasizes youth as an ongoing period of time.
  • Preterite emphasizes youth as a bygone era.

True, but in English I would have said “We have been young, too”, or “We were young once, too”. Plain “We were young, too”, to me it implies “at that time”, “when this happened”, for which Spanish imperfect is a good fit, IMO.

That said, English isn’t my first language, either.
