Don‘t the English and Spanish sentences have different meanings?

  • “I have no idea what to do next.” (no obligation involved, at least not necessarily)
  • “I have no idea what I need to do next.” (obligation involved)

The Spanish sentence has a problem, which is probably what causes your confusion: it should be “No tengo idea de qué tengo que hacer después”.

Thanks, @morbrorper! Then my hunch was correct that something about this sentence pairing is off. I’m not yet good enough at Spanish to have been able to pinpoint what that “something“ is, though.

The ChatGPT explanation was misleading and wrong. It only stressed the importance to “note the double tengo“. It doubled down on this “grammatical structure“ (as ChatGPT called it), assuring its correctness, instead of saying it’s wrong and correcting the error as you did. Yet another plausible-looking but wrong and useless “explanation“ against which I warned in Please consider removing the Explain feature entirely (FYI @mike). Thankfully we have humans (intelligences in the true sense of the word) like you @morbrorper in our community who are more reliable than LLM slop. :muscle:

I thought both forms were equivalent, but I admit I find your suggestion more elegant.

Update: I see now that on Tatoeba, there are two suggestions for correction:

No tengo idea de qué tengo que hacer después.
No tengo idea de qué hacer después.
