Why ‘desde’ and not ‘de’

Good question!

Because they can both mean “from,” the Spanish prepositions desde and de are easily confused. And the fact that they sometimes are interchangeable — for example, both de aquí al centro and desde aquí al centro can be used for “from here to downtown.” — doesn’t help matters.
