Multidirectional Learning

I would love for there to be a multidirectional learning option.

Right now, I am learning French, from English. Unfortunately, this currently means that I only ever get sentences written or spoken in French, for which I can only choose English multiple choice, or transcribe the French I’ve heard. Don’t get me wrong, this is fantastic, and has improved my comprehension of the French I hear exponentially. However, I would like more well-rounded education, namely, to hone the ability to, A) take the English in my head and convert it to French, AND, potentially to hone the ability to, B) take the grammatical structures I already understand from Spanish to help me understand/predict French structures.

A) The ability to go from English to French.

As a workaround, I have opened up another ‘Language track’ of ‘Learning English from French’, so that I can be presented with English sentences I might want to say in everyday conversation, and practice coming up with how I would say them in French.

However, it would be great if the option were natively built into the French games that sometimes the sentences are in French for me to transcribe, and sometimes they are in English for me to translate.

B) The ability to transfer knowledge from Spanish to French.

As a workaround, I have also opened a ‘Language track’ of Learning SPANISH from French, allowing me to see the grammatical structure of a Spanish sentence, and infer how that might sound in French. For example, ‘Qu’est-ce qui se passe?’ is an incomprehensible mind…melt from my English thinking, but when I realized that it is, word-for-word, ‘Qué es lo que se pasa?’, a Spanish sentence that is as fluent in my head as English is, it makes complete sense, without actually having to think about it.

What would be AMAZING is if there was just a ‘Learn French’ option, and then I could check-box the other languages I would like to relate to, in my case, English and Spanish. Then, all of the games would toss me some combination of French>Spanish, French>English, English>French, Spanish>French. This could even be a game-by-game selection, the same way that the ‘Play’ button re-triggers the options-box of “How do you want to practice today,” “Mode,” and “Sentences per round”. In my overall settings for French, I could select that the other languages I know well-enough are English, French and …Welsh or whatever, and then in the ‘Play’ option-box, only those three would be listed as options, rather than all 70 Languages.

Can we do this? It would be SUCH a game changer.

Okay, I just noticed that the Vocabulary option (multi choice and text input), have the option to hide the French text and only show the English translation initially. That’s a helpful workaround for issue “A”. It would be cool to also be able to do full text input instead of just a missing word - if it’s possible to approve multiple answers as it is with missing word. I would STILL love it to be more integrated and obvious, but yea, it’s a good work around for now.

Ooh, it would also be cool to toggle which translations we want to see under the answer.
