More Stats: Difference between Mastered in Total section and 100% mastered

In the More Stats section, I see 8,751 as “mastered” under the total section, and then 100% mastered in the cloze mastery tab says 9,378. What is the difference between the two?

I believe that the “Mastered” total is the total number of clozes that have been mastered for that language. In my experience, if you reset progress on an item (or an entire collection) that number doesn’t change.

So, for example my stats for German show 18215 for the “Mastered” total under the totals section of the More Stats display, but I currently have only 8996 under the 100% Mastered pie chart (or equally 8996 mastered on the display stats shown underneath “Score” on the main dashboard). In the case of German, I have completed a collection, then reset the collection and completed it again, and in addition I have created extra collections, completed them, and then deleted those collections. Therefore, I have a much larger number of “Mastered” sentences than are currently in the collections that I am playing.

Conversely, for Turkish I have 0 for the “Mastered” total under the totals section of the More Stats display, but I currently have 240 under the 100% Mastered pie chart.

Now, for Turkish I have not gone through the full cycle 25%-50%-75%-100% cycle for any sentence, so I have not “Mastered” any sentence. All of the 100% mastered items (for the pie chart or main dashboard figure under “Score”) are ones for which I have used the “Mark as Known” facility as they are simple words in the first 1000 words New FFT collection.

In summary, my interpretation of this is that the “Mastered” number on totals has two essential characteristics -

  • It shows the total number of sentences/clozes that you have ever mastered for that language pairing.
  • It does not include any sentences/clozes for which you have used the “Mark as Known” facility (unless you marked it as known after you had already mastered it).
