Can someone explain why this is POR and not PARA.

Here ‘por’ is being used in the sense of ‘for what reason’. For example, “I bought you a present because it’s your birthday”.

Also, I came across this discussion (in Spanish) which may shed more light on the subject.

I think this sentence should be removed, since both POR and PARA can be correct here. As @blogscot says, POR could be “because it’s your birthday”, but PARA could be “as a gift”. If you look for both on reverso.net, you’ll see both, but about 2x as many occurences of “para mi cumpleaños” as “por mi cumpleaños”,
