I feel ‘océano’ should be used here as a sea is not exactly the same thing as the ocean just as ‘el mar’ is not exactly the same thing as ‘el océano’.

Agreed. Since ocean was used in english, (in this case) ocean should be probably used in spanish.
I guess the strange translation stems from the sea/ocean dilemma in british/american english. In spanish, the distinction is somewhat clearer, the ocean is bigger than the sea (and there are basically like 5 of them, all subdivisions are seas; where one ends and the other starts, that’s another question). But iirc both can mean the whole mass of salt water, depending of if it’s american or british english, right? I guess that’s probably why it was chosen to translate ocean as mar
