Why is “le” necessary here?
It’s my impression that it’s not necessary, even a bit redundant. It would be interesting to hear from a native speaker, though.
Not sure if it’s necessary but it emphasizes the subject.

Grammatically, it isn’t necessary here, because “a la oscuridad” tells us what the person “has fear” of. But if you’re transcribing, you really do want to capture exactly what was said.

I think it’s a typo. To me it should be “él tiene”.
It’s not a typo. The “le” refers to “la oscuridad.” Said darkness is the indirect object in this sentence, which is the same reason an “a” comes before it in the sentence. Some sources I’ve run into say it’s grammatically necessary to use the indirect object marker, even when the indirect object is named in the sentence itself.
