Isn’t the le redundant here? As I see it, a Tom is connected to ayudante, not to the verb.

You can say ‘de Tom’, then it’s as you say and there is no ‘le’. But not with ‘a Tom’. You can see this because ‘… a Tom de ayudante’ still works, while ‘… de Tom de ayudante’ would not.
