I see both masculine and feminine uses of avestruz in the corpus.

Avestruces are officially masculino according to (https://www.rae.es/dpd/avestruz) It says it is a common mistake since avestruces (masculino) are examples of aves (femenino). Secretly, Iā€™m guessing people use the word so infrequently they just forget.

It could also be due to other words ending in -uz being feminine, such as luz and cruz.
