Welcome to the board! You’re certainly correct in your translation as “do it as I tell you”, but often adding the lo is more natural even when the “it” is implied. Another very common one is puedo entenderlo, as a translation of “I can understand”.

A lesser reason one might use hazlo como instead of haz como, is that the latter can also mean “act like” or “pretend”. I don’t think it’s ambiguous in this case though.
