Not really grammatical, no. Should probably be something like “… pero me dije, de perdidos al río, y decidí improvisar”. “De perdidos al río” is something you say when you have nothing to lose, so you might as well try. But it’s a quote, not something you decide or however the original sentence tries to use it.
