Fuiste encantador.

English Translation

You were charming.

I’m wondering why this uses ser and not estar. Is this said to someone who used to be charming?

Image you and your girlfriend visited her parents last night for the first time. After much anxiety you managed to impress her parents and she’s relieved and very pleased with the way you charmed them.

But is there something about encantador that calls for ser instead of estar? What about guapo: fuiste or estuviste? I would naively go for the latter.

Not sure. Google says “Eras encantadora” (feminine) …“Eras encantador” (masculine)

But 'Fuiste encantador" can imply a different meaning in context (as blogscot mentions).

My thinking these days is that being charming is not about looks but behavior, and then ser comes naturally. We can consider the opposite: Fuiste desagradable y grosero.
