Estoy tan avergonzado que podría cavar un agujero y arrastrarme a él.

English Translation

I’m so embarrassed I could dig a hole and crawl into it.

I’m wondering, is agujero the best choice of word here? Am I wrong in associating this word with something you make with an aguja (needle)?

How about hoyo?

FWIW, Google Ngrams has “un hoyo” as most used along with cavar:

I never made the connection between agujero and aguja and thought that the former word could be used for a hole of any size. But it does refer to a smaller hole in all the example sentences on Linguee, although not generally as tiny as needle-sized.

I agree, I’ve never made that connection either, obvious as it is. Agujero is a generic word for any hole, small or big (‘agujero negro’). But hoyo is the better choice in this sentence because it means specifically a hole in the ground.
