I’ve mostly heard this with the implication that the husband takes off his wedding ring and has a good time. But maybe that’s a thing of the past.

It is also, but not necessarily, used to say that you stay at work in the summer and your family is away on holiday in the meantime. Maybe you take advantage of it to go out partying or you stay at home quietly. This expression was used more when only men worked, but now that women work too, it is hardly ever used. I doubt that even teenagers in Spain know it.
