The word riatas seems to be regional; maybe palizas would be more widely understood?
I hadn’t heard of riata before. So, for me, yes, paliza would be more understandable. You would need to change the sentence a bit, because “palizas” cannot fly. -Hubieron- Hubo palizas, maybe, -hubieron- hubo altercados, in a more formal register (what you might hear in the news, for example). What can fly, however, are ostias. So you could more simply change riatas → -ostias- hostias, to be understood (at least in spain)
