the verb manejar should work here as well
This sentence sounds really off to my ear.
It’s more natural to say: Fue a la tienda en coche (or carro or w/e).
Same with: ‘She walked to the store’, we’d say: ‘Fue andando a la tienda’ or ‘Fue a pie’, not *‘Anduvo a la tienda’.

Although I agree with you, it should be said that there are quite a few similar sentences on Tatoeba, using condujo. I think it’s due to the “translation effect”, where the translator is influenced by the source language. It might also be because the translator wanted to show the irregular inflection of the verb.
