IMO, yes, it’s probably more natural in this situation to say “pidió detalles” (the “por” is not omitted there, it is simply used in this collocation).
However, the construction “preguntar por” does exist (see some exaples in the Diccionario panhispanico de dudas). Initially it seemed fine to me, but after reading your comment, I started second guessing myself. It seems to me now that “preguntar por” would be used in other situations, but not specifially with details, although, I cannot come up with an explanation as of why
