The cat is hiding in the corner of the room.
Given that the translation starts with, “The cat is hiding …” (same for the AI translation), why is “escondido” used instead of “escondiendo”?

Unlike English ‘hide’, ‘esconder’ cannot be used intransitively (¿está escondiendo qué?).
You can say ‘se está escondiendo’ or ‘se esconde’ but these can mean ‘the cat is getting/gets into hiding’. ‘El gato está escondido’ matches the English better. I think ‘se esconde’ is acceptable.
