How does the sentence’s meaning change if deberíamos was used instead?
As far as I understand, the conditional and the past subjunctive are equally valid in this context, so the meaning would be same.

I did some digging into this subject and came across the following explanation:
Con los verbos modales poder, deber, saber, querer , el condicional simple puede ser sustituido por el imperfecto de subjuntivo :
Deberías hablar con ella. = Debieras hablar con ella.
Querría pedirle un favor. = Quisiera pedirle un favor.
