Cuando estuve en Francia salí cada noche a tomar una copa.

This is a sentence from a grammar book of mine. I wonder whether “salí” is right, as opposed to “salía”.

Depends on what you’re trying to express. As is, the sentence means “[…] I went out drinking every night”.

With “salía” it would convey “[…] I used to go out …” or maybe “[…] I would go out …”
