(idiomatic) to fish for compliments
I’ve just stumbled across this; I don’t really know if other spanish-speaking areas is the other way around, (otherwise the Wiktionary entry is just incorrect) but, at least in spain, “tirar la caña”, is very much more about flirting, than to fish for compliments - if anything, you’d be handing out compliments, not receiving them.

That was very confusing.
I went to the Wiktionary page that @morbrorper linked to, and saw that this idiom means “to flirt”.
Wait. What? Eh? 
Then I clicked on “View History” and saw that the page had been changed a little earlier by someone with the username “ThatMightyDolphin”.
Ah. Right. OK.
I suspect that @TheMightyDolphin might know something about this change to the Wiktionary page that was made by ThatMightyDolphin

Ah, shoot, yeah. Since I was there, I took the opportunity to change it on the wiktionnary. I didn’t realise it would actually be a bit confusing to someone coming from this thread
