Bedsheets seem pretty rare in Germany; I’ve been there three times, traveled all around, stayed in hostels, a few hotels, and several people’s homes, and I don’t think I recall sleeping anywhere that had them, it’s always a duvet (Bettdecke) with no sheets. Is there anywhere in Germany or German-speaking countries where sheets like we have in the US are common?
Usually Spannbettlaken are used so you might have mistaken the mattress being coverd with such for a blank mattress?

Oh yeah, that makes sense, I think what I was talking about was absence of the top layer of sheets!
