Is there no other word for “pie” in Polish? Is “ciasta” applicable to both cake and pie?
apple pie is szarlotka for example
I don’t know, but my understanding is that cake can be tort or ciastko, not ciasto
also dough is ciasto
@Krazee9 from what I can see here List of pies, tarts and flans - Wikipedia English logic creates dessert names by adding a word before the word pie or cake.

What are your thoughts?
When I go to the English Wikipedia page for “pie” and change it to Polish, it gives me “Placek (ciasto)” and the photos in it do look like pies.
