I had a strong intuition that this word shared an etymology with the word “strive” in English, which has a similar-ish meaning, and I was surprised to find not only that this intuition was correct, but that the word “strive” is unusual in that it was derived from a French loanword into Middle English, which was in turn derived from a word that was borrowed from Frankish (a Germanic language)…so the word did come from the same root but crossing into a different language branch and then back in the process!
