I know, I really should know. Is is the similarity of English words with romance languages. I noticed it while up-giving on Activity so thought I’d ask.

It’s a language originally known as Occidental (and still usually called that) until 1949. It was created in 1922 to be an international language and, as you have already noted, is really easy to understand. I’m fluent in it and there are about…I’d say 200 or so others who know it. It was really popular in the 1930s and 1940s, suffered during and after the war, went into decline and was close to dead until the internet brought it back to life.
