It’s interesting to note that the sentence’s history on Tatoeba shows that the wording has been changed back and forth between amateur and amatrice, before settling on the former, without any explanation.
The original sentence isn’t about wine, either.

I was going to say that, to me, amatrice sounds more like someone who does something as a hobby (like, not a professional) and amateure, like someone that really enjoys something. But, if I understand Wiktionnaire’s entry correctly, both are possible…
However, it also says that it is invariable, which, admittedly, is a bit confusing.
Quebec’s language governing body, agrees with you in that the feminine should be amatrice. To summ up their position:
- when talking about men → amateur (un coureur amateur, un cinéaste amateur)
- when talking about women → amatrice (une coureuse amatrice, une cinéaste amatrice)
- when talking about things → amateur (un film amateur, une chanson amateur)
But this seems to clash with the academie’s standpoint, as summarised here (on another forum)
Anyway, it’s confusing. Since it’s a sentence taken out of context, we could also “fix” it by changing devenue to devenu, and avoiding the problem altogether (but then we lose the learning opportunity : D )
