Visto che sono stato malato per una settimana, sto facendo tutto il possibile per recuperare.

English Original Sentence

Since I was sick for a week, I’m making every possible effort to catch up.

Does recuperare express the notion of making up for time lost? To me it sounds more like recovering from the sickness.

@morbrorper My thinking too. I think raggiungere would be closer to “catch up”.

On second thought, to recover, wouldn’t that be *recuperarmi?

Looks like we have several options depending on context. Nice!

Yes, “recuperare” in general means “to salvage”, to recover or to retrieve, but it is commonly used in the sense of “getting back” lost time.

In the sense “Recovering from a sickness” I would use “riprendersi” or “rimettersi in forze” or even “recuperare le forze”.
