I have to disagree; there’s not necessarily any external force involved. Compare with “Vi blev tvingade att …” (somebody forced us to …).
For example, consider this: “Vi var tvungna att avboka vår tid på grund av sjukdom.” = “Vi måste avboka vår tid på grund av sjukdom.”
In Wiktionary it says ‘tvungen , 1. forced (by circumstances)’. I will admit to being biased by Danish where for ‘have to’ we have the milder ‘nödt til’.
