Vi var tvungna att avboka vår tid.

English Translation

We had to cancel our appointment.

The word ‘tvungna’ is very strong, more like ‘forced’ than ‘had to’.

I have to disagree; there’s not necessarily any external force involved. Compare with “Vi blev tvingade att …” (somebody forced us to …).

For example, consider this: “Vi var tvungna att avboka vår tid på grund av sjukdom.” = “Vi måste avboka vår tid på grund av sjukdom.”

In Wiktionary it says ‘tvungen , 1. forced (by circumstances)’. I will admit to being biased by Danish where for ‘have to’ we have the milder ‘nödt til’.
