I thought that Russian translations of English sentences of the form “Wait until X happens” tend to use the pattern “Wait while ~X happens”, where ~X is the opposite of X.

The difference is stylistic. The sentence is more formal without не and more conversational, everyday with не.

Both sentences would be correct.
