Thinking a bit about this one, if I’d made it myself i’d have used the trasitive version (溜める) to mean “the more they amass”.

Both feel natural to me. I suppose it depends on how much agency they have in this “amassing” process. With the intransitive one, it feels like you’re saying that their desire is triggered by the presence of the thing that’s accumulating. With the transitive one, it focuses on their behaviour: the more they do the act of amassing, the more they want it.
