I think it’s ‘that’ and not ‘the’ dog :wink:

The dog is black. = その犬は黒いです。
That dog is black. The dog over there is black. = あの犬は黒いです。

These are typical translations. But honestly, we don’t distinguish between その and あの like English “the” and “that”.
