I recently found out that the word siblings wasn’t even in common use until the 1970s.

I didn’t know that. Apparently, it existed long ago, but fell out of use, and only came back in the twentieth century.
I have heard people trying to popularize the term “niblings” for “nieces and nephews”. Maybe someday that will be common.
