I thought he wouldn’t come.

How would you change this to say, “He thought (they) wouldn’t come”?

As you pointed out, the Japanese sentence can be interpreted as either

  1. He thought/assumed that (someone) wouldn’t come.
  2. I (or someone) thought/assumed that he wouldn’t come.

In order to avoid confusion, the first context had better be rephrased by 来ないだろうと彼は思っていた, and the second one be 彼は来ないだろうと私は思っていた.
