その子は学校にあこがれる年頃だ。

English Translation

The kid is old enough to go to school.

this one seems really odd to me, i think of “old enough to go to school” as having the same meaning as “this kid should already be enrolled in school at this age”, but when i check for the meaning of “あこがれる” in jisho.org it says it has the same meaning as “yearn for”, which is not a feeling i see in the translated sentence

As you pointed out, the English-Japanese translation pair doesn’t match.

The kid is old enough to go to school. = その子は就学年齢に達している。(pron. しゅうがくねんれい、たっして; lit. The kid has already reached the appropriate age for schooling.)

The kid is around the age to dream of schooling. = その子は学校にあこがれる年頃だ。
