彼女は進んで母親の手伝いをした。

English Translation

She helped her mother of her own accord.

Would it be wrong/sound weird to use 選んで(えらんで) instead of 進んで(すすんで) in this sentence?

@TisYanni

選んで sounds very unnatural in this context.

選ぶ means “to choose from several options” and 選んで as an adverb in this sentence can be even interpreted as 1) being picky (i.e. there were more people in need, but she ignored the others and helped only her mother.); or 2) to sacrifice her career/dream and focus on helping her mother to squeeze her time.

進む means “to go forward” or “to propel”. 進んで as an adverb literally means “one’s drive forces go forward”, so it means “be willing to” or “be happy to do”.
