妹から便りがあった。手紙によれば目下元気だそうだ。

English Translation

I heard from my sister. The letter says she is well now.

shouldn’t 目下 be read as もっか in this one?

@ErisCeos
目下 should be read もっか. But I found the collocation of 目下 and 元気 unnatural a little. If you want to say “at this very moment”, 今のところは元気だ sounds much better.

目下 (もっか) is often used in

  • 目下の目標は体重5キロ減です。(pron. もっか、もくひょう、たいじゅう、ごきろ、げん) = The current (tentative) goal is to loose five kilograms.
  • 目下の悩みは長時間労働です。(pron. もっか、なやみ、ちょうじかん、ろうどう) = What bothers me at this moment is long working hours.

目下 (もっか) has the connotations of either 1) “in the short-term” or “temporarily”. In other words, the situation may change in the near future; Or 2) “approaching” or “urgent to solve”. 元気 (physical and mental health) doesn’t fit the connotations of 目下.

Please also note that 目下 could be read めした when it means “subordinate” or “junior to someone”.
