Why is あれ used over それ? I have some trouble knowing when to use one over the other.
あれ何？ means the object in question is far from both the speaker and the listener. The listener will likely answer “あれはリンゴだよ.”
それ何？ means the object in question is far from the speaker, but is located near the listener or possessed by the listener. The listener will likely answer “これはリンゴだよ” because the apple is near the listener.
