Something more forceful than “You may as well do it now.” is needed? Perhaps “You should do it now.” Or “You’d better do it now.” And if I correctly remember MsFixer’s comment on another sentence, then 作業 for “task” rather than 仕事?

It depends on the context, but indeed “should” or “it’d be good if” etc. is better in most cases.
There’s also “you had better,” which I find Japanese people overuse in incorrect situations without understanding the nuance. It’s enough that even this article has to explain it:
